June 2012

June was a very busy month.  Grace was out of school, but Elijah had a few more weeks, and those weeks were insanely busy.  He presented his first research project (call inquiry projects) on Tiger Sharks.  He did so well with the research, writing, and the presentation.

Elijah's school doesn't have a field day for the younger kids.  So they had bubble day!!

Elijah was in his first musical production.  The K-3 graders presented The Pied Piper musical.  It was insanely well done and VERY cute!!

And then there was the last day of school!

A most excellent playdate with most excellent friends gave me a chance to try out my new waterproof case for my camera.

We spent a TON of time at the beach before leaving for the mountains.  I love that my kids love it there, feel comfortable in the water and would rather amuse themselves in the sun and sand than in front of the TV or computer.

FIRST DAY!!!

Elijah started kindergarten today.  And quite frankly, I thought I would be a blubbering mess... And ALMOST did because of my loving husband.  sigh.  but I made it through.  Grace had a super hard time without her brother here all day... but of course, when he got home, they fought.  sigh.  Grace will start her preschool in a couple of weeks, and I may really break down then.  Both my babies away from me... eek!!

Anyway, Elijah did great!  He told me he had fun, there were frisbees flying in the road (apparetnly), and lobsters being built and knocked down, chickens drawn, and new friends introduced, and oh yeah, they read The Kissing Hand (he came home and drew me a kissing hand and THAT almost made me turn into a blubbering mess!), and there was a slew of instructions about the Green Folder (yes, it deserves caps) and what happens with it, and there were two books that he got to look at during rest time... all the books are silly books in the class.

AND after a moment of panic (my child was not waiting for me to be picked up....)  the first thing out of his mouth before even buckling his seat belt, "Mommy, I had a great day at school!"

I'm so glad!!

I'M SO EXCITED!!!!!!

And I really don't want to hide it....
Last Spring we found out that Elijah was on the waiting list after a lottery drawing for our local charter school.  All summer I emailed back and forth with the office seeing if had moved up. He was originally 16th, then moved up to 13th, and then he was 5th... and then 6th.  Not sure if the last was an oversight or what, but whatever   This morning, we got the call that he is IN!!!  School starts next week, so we were right under the line there.  We had him enrolled in his district school of course, but we REALLLY wanted him at CFCI.
I filled out the paper work and after a crazy weirdness with his other school (they couldn't find his immunization records that I just dropped off LAST WEEK!) and a quick trip to the doc's for a copy of the immunization records, he is enrolled and ready to roll.
He would, of course, been fine anywhere, but this school goes through middle school AND Grace now has a spot that will be held for her as well.  I just really think that he will flourish in this atmosphere.  The classes are small and everything is really tailored to each individual child.  He will have the same teacher for the first two years he is there as well.
So this weekend, which is already full with birthday parties and a baby shower I am throwing, will also include supply shopping.  His other school had 4 things on their list.... this school has about 15 (none of which are the same... alas!) No biggie though.  I'm happy to do it!  We attend Open House on Friday and my little guy starts kindergarten next Tuesday!  It's totally bittersweet, but also amazing and great!  He's going to knock 'em dead!!!

Kindergarten Orientation...

We went last night to see Elijah's school for next year.  The boy was less than thrilled.  He said he only wants Ms. Sullivan to be his teacher (his current Pre-K teacher.)  I totally get it kid.  I am not a huge fan of change, but alas, we must all go through it.  After seeing the classrooms and the school and seeing what he was going to learn next year, I think that he started to feel a bit better about the whole thing.  I have already signed up to be a room mom, a volunteer with the school, and to help with the Fall Festival next year.  I plan on being as involved as possible.  I want our children to succeed in whatever they do, and I plan on helping out in any way possible to make sure this happens.
The teachers all seemed kind and ready to help.  They seemed excited about the new year as well.  The principal was there and ready to answer questions and greet parents.  And while there was not a huge turn out, there was enough to get an idea of what his class will be like.
I'm sad that my little guy is growing up so dang quick.  He has recently started the "I don't like you" when he's mad at us.  I tell him that it's fine to not like me, but to know that I will always love him.... which is hard to remember and to say when you feel like you want to wring his little neck Simpsons style.  Sigh. But it's true.  No matter how mad they make me, I will always love them.  Always.  And watching him go to kindergarten will probably have me in a fit of tears for at least a week, but then I think of all the cool things he'll learn and I'm so excited for him.
So here's to a fun summer!  To back to school shopping, and the getting ready.  I'm buckling in for this roller coaster and stocking up on kleenex!
